Europe Trip 2007 - Individual Jumping

This was our first run at the trial.  There was no warm-up jump and the surface was very deep sand,
like the soft part of the beach.  There were lots of knocked bars all weekend.  (but none for Hemi!)

Suzi and I sat in the bleachers and watched the first 50 or so dogs run this course.  It was not a pretty sight!
I think we only saw about 5 clean runs.  There was certainly an advantage to being later in the running order.
There were problems with off courses on the way to #7, lots of missed weave entries, lots of back jumps at #13,
and a few off courses at #17.

As I was leading out, I felt my shoelace come untied.  Dilemma!  Do I run with the lace undone and hope I don't trip?  Do I go back to the start line, tie it and start over?  (not sure if there is a delay of start penalty, etc…) I decided to give Hemi an extra "stay" command, then just tied it while standing in the middle of the course!!

Hemi had a great run although we lost some time as she got hung up in the chute exit, which was secured to the ground.  I thought she was clean until we crossed the finish and someone told me that she had run past jump #4.  It never occurred to me she would have a problem there and I was already working the discrimination in the very tightly spaced box of obstacles.  So I never saw her go past it.  Such a shame...

In retrospect, I wonder if she hadn't figured out how to turn yet on this surface.  The first three jumps were basically a straight line, so this was her first time to try to turn in the soft sand.  It's so rare for her to make a mistake like this,
that's the only thing that
makes sense to me.

Even though we were
scored Elimination,
I felt like this was a great run!

Watch it here!
